Designing a kitchen island can transform both the functionality and style of your space. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk through how to create a custom kitchen island using MSMV Design Software. From setting dimensions to choosing materials and layout details, you’ll see exactly how each element comes together. Follow along with screenshots to easily replicate the process and build a design that fits your needs and aesthetic.
Adding Island Wall to the Design
Now that you’ve set up your base and wall cabinets, it’s time to create the centerpiece of your kitchen, the island. In the layout panel on the left, select the Island Wall option to start defining a separate island structure.

Once placed, enter the desired dimensions, including length, width, and height, based on your space and design goals. Make sure to leave enough clearance around the island for comfortable movement and functionality before moving on to the next step.

Placing Base Cabinets on the Island Wall
With your island wall defined, the next step is to begin adding base cabinets to shape the structure and functionality of your island. Navigate to the cabinet selection section and choose base cabinets that best suit your intended layout. Consider both storage needs and how the island will be used.

Drag and drop the cabinets to the island wall, ensuring they align properly and snap into position. Most design software, including MSMV, will automatically adjust placement to maintain a clean, continuous layout. You can mix different cabinet types, such as drawer units, standard storage cabinets, or even specialized cabinets, depending on your design goals.
As you place each cabinet, pay attention to dimensions and spacing. Make sure the total length fits within your planned island size and leaves enough room for walkways around it. You can adjust cabinet widths or swap units as needed to achieve a balanced look. This is also a good time to think ahead about countertop overhangs if you plan to include seating on one side.
Method 1: Adding an Overhang from the Cabinet Section
To create a seating area or extend your countertop visually, you can add an overhang directly from the cabinet section. In MSMV Design Software, go to the base cabinets category and look for the overhang component. It is typically located under Base Cabinets → Uncategorized, but if you don’t see it right away, you can simply type “overhang” into the search bar to find it quickly.

Once selected, place the overhang element along the front side of your island where you plan to have seating or additional counter space. Align it carefully with your base cabinets so it sits flush and follows the length of the island.
After placing it, right-click on the overhang and choose More Settings. From there, you can adjust the dimensions to match your design needs, such as increasing the depth to allow for comfortable seating or extending the width to span across multiple cabinets. Take a moment to fine-tune these measurements so the overhang looks proportionate and functional within your layout.

PRO TIP: For comfortable kitchen island seating, an overhang depth of 12 to 15 inches is recommended.

Method 2: Setting the Overhang Through Base Cabinet Settings
Another way to create an overhang in MSMV Design Software is by adjusting the countertop settings directly within each base cabinet. Start by clicking on one of your base cabinets. Then, right-click and select More Settings to open the cabinet configuration panel. Inside, locate the Countertop section, this is where you can control how far the countertop extends beyond the cabinet edges.

In the countertop settings, you’ll find fields for overhang values. Enter your desired measurement for the front overhang (and sides if needed). As you apply these changes, the countertop will automatically extend outward, creating the overhang effect without the need to place a separate component.
Creating a Waterfall Effect on the Island
To give your kitchen island a more modern, high-end look, you can easily create a waterfall effect using a dedicated panel from the cabinet section. In MSMV Design Software, go to Base Cabinets → Uncategorized and locate the waterfall panel component. (See image 4)
Once selected, simply place the panel on each exposed side of your island. After placing the panels, right-click on each one and select More Settings. In the settings menu, navigate to the Countertop section, where you’ll find options to adjust the bottom overhang. This allows you to control how the panel aligns with the floor and cabinetry, ensuring a clean and precise finish.

Fine-Tuning and Styling Your Kitchen Island
With the main structure complete, the final step is to fine-tune your island and bring the design together visually. This is where you can make small adjustments that have a big impact on the overall look and feel.

Start by customizing cabinet details. You can turn off handles for a sleek, modern appearance or switch them out for a different style that better matches your design. Next, explore color options, adjust cabinet finishes, countertop materials, or even the waterfall panels to create contrast or a cohesive palette.
You can also enhance the island by adding decorative elements and functional accessories. Consider placing bar stools or chairs along the overhang to define the seating area. Depending on your design goals, you might add items like pendant lighting, small décor pieces, or even built-in features to make the space feel more complete.
